Ali Esmaeili
Plastic Surgeon,
Royal Free Hospital
Ali Esmaeili, a Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital since 2005, brings a wealth of global experience to his role. Having lived in six countries and worked in three healthcare systems, he strongly advocates for cultural change and adaptability in surgery. His diverse background has shaped his belief that 'change is a must' for creating environments that support medical professionals and patient outcomes.
He leads six ongoing change projects, including redesigning the hospital restaurant, which raised £300,000 with the principle of "happy staff, happier patients." Ali is a trustee of Doctors in Distress, dedicated to improving healthcare professionals' mental health. Through his leadership in the teaching program, he fosters a safe, supportive learning culture and advocates for preventive medicine to be embraced by healthcare staff, a message he shares widely on his social media platforms. Across all his initiatives, Ali applies the Kaizen method of 1% daily improvement, proving that small, consistent changes can lead to significant long-term transformation.
In addition to his leadership roles, Ali is a lecturer at UCL, where he actively contributes to teaching, innovation, and robotics in surgery. He has raised £1.3 million for projects like the Charles Wolfson Centre and holds an Executive Master's in Medical Leadership with distinction from Bayes Business School.
